Description

Gluten free croutons are crunchy slices of bread cut in cubes, seasoned with flavorful seasoning, and baked straight in the oven. The best croutons are not too dry and not too soft, but they have a perfect contrast of crispy and crunchy texture, perfectly balanced with olive oil and butter moistness.

I had never thought of making homemade crispy and crunchy gluten-free croutons until I had tested it myself. The idea of making the perfect croutons that I could have on my soups, salads, and stews was always on my mind. It comes to a real deal when I have tested many crouton recipes until I reached the best version of croutons that are gluten-free, easy to make in batches and ready to pair with my favorite Caesar salad. Oh yes!

Ingredients

Scale
  1. 3 slices of gluten-free bread (1 inch width of each slice)
  2. 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  3. 3 tablespoons olive oil
  4. ¼ teaspoon of salt
  5. ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  6. ¼ teaspoon Italian seasoning
  7. ¼ teaspoon dry parsley seasoning
  8. Pinch of black pepper
  9. 1 tbsp shaved parmesan (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cut Gluten-Free Bread into Cubes: Stack gluten-free bread slices on each other and cut into ½ or 1-inch cubes. To cut the cubes, cut the stacked bread vertically and then horizontally with a sharp, straight knife.
  2. Mix Butter and Olive Oil: Melt the butter in the microwave for about 30 seconds, then mix with the olive oil.
  3. Season the Butter and Olive Oil: Mix the butter and olive oil with basic seasonings like salt, garlic powder, pepper, Italian seasoning, dry parsley, and shaved parmesan.
  4. Toss Everything Together: Toss the bread cubes in seasoned butter and oil mixture. Mix everything until all of the bread cubes are coated.
  5. Arrange on Baking Tray: Spread and arrange the seasoned croutons on a baking tray.
  6. Bake: Bake the croutons at 350°F for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, check them and flip them with a spatula so the other side is exposed to the heat. Bake again for 5 minutes, checking and flipping every 5 minutes for another 20 minutes or until they are crispy and brown.

Notes

  1. Cut the bread slices with a sharp knife to help in sharp cubes with no crumbled edges.
  2. Mixing butter and olive oil is a perfect way to make gluten-free croutons because the olive oil transforms the croutons from the outside to brown, and the butter makes them moist. The crunchy-moist contrast is what makes them unique.
  3. The choice of seasonings is all yours. Chopped herbs, chili flakes, or paprika powder can be added for extra smoky and herby flavors.
  4. You can brown them crispy in the air fryer or stovetop in a skillet or pan.
  5. Cool them completely before serving because they become crispier with the passing time.
