Description

Vasilopita recipe – A 1600 year old Greek tradition. “Sweet Bread of Basil” is the true meaning of the Greek phrase vasilopita. One of Greece’s finest and inspirational customs. This cake is so delicious, aromatic, fluffy, and easy that everyone asks for another piece along with the recipe. Bread is flavored with sweet ingredients to represent the unending sweetness and joy of life.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 250 g unsalted butter (1 cup)
  • 250 g powdered sugar (2 cups)
  • 4 whole eggs
  • 400 g all-purpose flour (3 cups)
  • 1 tbsp baking powder (1 sachet)
  • 100 ml orange juice (1/2 cup)
  • 100 ml Greek yogurt (1/2 cup)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 almond (or coin)

Decoration:

  • powder sugar
  • rosemary
  • pomegranate

Instructions

  1. Beat the Ingredients. Take soft butter and powdered sugar in a beater. Mix the soft butter and powdered sugar until it is homogeneous. Now gradually add eggs one by one, vanilla extract, Greek yogurt, orange juice, baking powder, All-purpose flour, and a pinch of salt and mix well to combine.
  2. Prepare the oven. Preheat your oven to 160C (325F).
  3. Grease The Pan. Grease the inside of a baking pan and line a pan with baking paper.
  4. Pour mixture into pan. Pour mixture into a 9” pan.
  5. Hide an almond. Hide the almond into the mixture and straighten the surface. You can also use a coin wrapped in a foil and place it into the batter.
  6. Bake. Bake the batter for 50 – 60 minutes at 160C (325F) or until the skewer comes out clean.
  7. Cool and remove. Let the vasilopita cool down and flip the pan on a plate.
  8. Decoration. For a festive touch, dust the cake with powdered sugar. I decorate with pomegranates and rosemary. After moving the cake to a serving tray, enjoy! Happy New Year.
