I had never thought of making homemade crispy and crunchy gluten-free croutons until I had tested it myself. The idea of making the perfect croutons that I could have on my soups, salads, and stews was always on my mind. It comes to a real deal when I have tested many crouton recipes until I reached the best version of croutons that are gluten-free, easy to make in batches and ready to pair with my favorite Caesar salad. Oh yes!

Why Will You Love This Recipe

  • Lots of Deliciousness: I never imagined gluten-free croutons to be this delicious, not like ordinary gluten-free snacks. The seasoning takes them to another level, or maybe better than regular croutons.
  • Easy and Cheaper Than Store-Bought: These croutons are easy to make at home and a lot cheaper than store-bought. I once bought them for $19$, and I regretted it the most when I discovered the homemade version. One more thing I don’t like is the taste of store-bought, either. Try this for loved ones who are sensitive to gluten, pack them gifts, and see their happy reactions.
  • A Canvas to Paint with Flavors: Talking about their variations, apart from these seasonings, they can be made with other seasonings and flavors. Try herby seasonings when you want them in Caesar salad. Paprika and chili flakes seasonings for serving along a warm bowl of tomato soup. Forget the salty and savory role of croutons when you can make them according to your dessert. To make the dessert, croutons are added to seasonings like cinnamon and sugar. Layer these croutons with cream layers in a strawberry or berry dessert cup. Oh my God, my mouth is drooling just thinking of these desserts right now.

Ingredients

  • Gluten-free Bread: I like to use sturdy Canyon Bakehouse, as it has the best taste and is made with whole grain ingredients. You can make with your favorite gluten-free bread. Even gluten-free sourdough bread or a baguette will work.
  • Butter and Olive Oil: Although the croutons can be made with either butter or olive oil, I am ending this debate by using both at the same time, and I think it’s the best way.
  • Seasoning: The choice of seasonings is yours, but I think salt, pepper (the basic seasoning), and garlic powder are a must. Adding a bit of Italian seasoning and dry parsley does not cost much but definitely adds extra deliciousness.
  • Shaved Parmesan: It is totally optional. I recommend including it, and you won’t be disappointed!

Expert Tips

  • Cut the bread slices with a sharp knife to help in sharp cubes with no crumbled edges.
  • Mixing butter and olive oil is a perfect way to make gluten-free croutons because the olive oil transforms the croutons from the outside to brown, and the butter makes them moist. The crunchy-moist contrast is what makes them unique.
  • The choice of seasonings is all yours. Chopped herbs, chili flakes, or paprika powder can be added for extra smoky and herby flavors.
  • You can brown them crispy in the air fryer or stovetop in a skillet or pan.
  • Cool them completely before serving because they become crispier with the passing time.

Storage suggestions

These croutons can be kept fresh for 6-7 days if kept in a less humid place in an airtight container. Make sure to store them once they are cooled so moisture does not trap inside and make them soggy. They freeze for up to a month. Just freeze for 15 minutes before freezing and putting in an airtight container. Reheat in an oven to restore the crisp at 350°F for 15 minutes.
