Matcha cookies are soft and chewy cookies. The matcha cookies recipe is a combination of goodness of matcha powder, butter, egg, all-purpose flour, white chocolate, and brown sugar. I discovered these cookies when I was traveling in Japan with my husband. We went to a small tea café and ordered their top products. We were served matcha tea and matcha cookies. My husband and I like the taste so much that going back to America I made these with my effort.

  • Unsalted butter, brown sugar, and white sugar: Unsalted butter is used to make the cookies moist and soft. We caramelize this unsalted butter with brown sugar and white sugar to create a brown butter mixture.
  • Egg: Egg acts as a binding agent in cookies that prevents cookies from crumbling and helps the cookies to maintain their structure.
  • White chocolate chips: White chocolate chips add sweetness to cookies and provide a great experience when it melts in your mouth! If you don’t like white chocolate, you can substitute these with simple chocolate chips. 

How to make matcha cookies Recipe

1. Dry Ingredients Preparation:

In a bowl add all-purpose flour, baking soda, salt, and matcha powder. Sift all these ingredients to avoid lumps and attain a smooth consistency.

2. Preparing the Brown Butter:

Add butter to a saucepan and heat it on medium flame. Lower the temperature if needed. Stir the butter continuously to prevent the butter from burning. You will see butter will gently caramelize. When small milk solids start forming at the bottom, remove the butter from the heat and set it aside. In a separate bowl mix white sugar, brown sugar, and prepared warm brown butter. Make sure to add brown butter warm, not too hot. Stir in egg quickly to prevent curling into the mixture until well combined.

3. Mix Wet and Dry Ingredients:

Mix the brown butter mixture with the powder mixture. Mix white chocolate chips into the mixture for the cookies. At this point, you can add any desired chopped nuts, or dried fruits if you want.

4. Shape the Dough:

I prefer to shape my dough into a ball shape with my hands, but you can shape it with the help of a scooper on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Gently press your cookies and flatten the cookies.

5. Refrigerate the Cookies Before Baking:

To prevent the cookies from spreading too much I prefer to refrigerate for 15 or 30 minutes before baking.

6. Bake and Serve:

 Bake the cookies at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 13 to 15 minutes. While baking, check your cookies often to bake on to the bottom. Make sure to not serve these cookies too hot. Allow around 5 minutes to rest before serving!
