The story behind how I got this Whirley Pop is that last Christmas, my sweet granny gifted me a Whirley Pop stovetop popcorn maker. My granny told me that popcorn made in Whirley is always the best theater popcorn. I did not take this seriously until I made the popcorn myself, and I think she was absolutely right. Equipment
Ingredients for Whirley Pop Recipe
- Popcorn kernels: Popcorn kernels are dried versions of regular kernels. Take a quarter cup of popcorn kernel.
- Coconut oil: Use coconut popping oil that is specially made for popcorn. We are using coconut oil because it does not burn even at high temperatures. You can use any other oil that does not burn at high temperatures for making this movie popcorn recipe like canola oil, vegetable oil, avocado oil, or corn oil.
- Salt: I am adding salt in oil as I like my popcorn this way, but you can also sprinkle salt on popcorn instead. Use the amount of salt according to your taste buds.
- Melted unsalted butter: I am using melted unsalted butter for the topping of my butter popcorn in theater style. It will give the popcorn a classic theater popcorn aroma and will make the popcorn even tastier and more moist. If you are not using salt directly you can also use salted butter to adjust the flavors.
Instructions
Step 1. Place the popper on the stovetop. Using the lid, pour the coconut oil into the popper. Add salt and kernel to the popper. Turn the heat from medium to medium-high and start cranking with your hand. The speed of cranking does not matter but make sure to stir it continuously.
Step 2. While stirring continuously for about two and a half minutes, popping of corn kernels starts. Now you will continuously hear the popping sound while hand cranking. When your hand feels some resistance while the cranking and popping sound decreases remove the popper from the stovetop immediately.
Step 3. After removing the popper from the stove stop you will still hear some popping sound. Open the whirley pop and serve the popcorn in a popcorn cup or a serving bowl. Pour melted butter on top of the popcorn for topping.
Recipe Tips
- Stir the popper using the cranking mechanism to prevent the kernels from burning down. None of the kernels remain unpopped with continuous stirring.
- Never pop your popcorn with butter on the stovetop because it will cause smoke and burn the corn kernels.
- Use good quality whirley pop to get the best popcorn.
- Don’t cover the popper lid after popcorn is ready as they will get soggy due to moisture inside of the popper. Remove the lid immediately after the popcorn is done.
- Experimenting with different seasonings like white cheddar seasoning, paprika seasoning, butter, or garlic powder is the best for popcorn seasoning.
Storage Instructions for Whirley Pop Popcorn
Make the whirley pop thearter popcorn fresh and enjoy it fresh. You can store the popcorn without melted butter in an airtight jar at room temperature for 3-5 days. I don’t recommend its long-term storage.
