Yes, You Won’t Loath Bone Broth Anymore!

I have been making hot chocolate for a decade and never thought of enjoying it in this nutritional and delicious way. Well, it’s not wrong to say that I always loathed bone broth (I know it may not be true in your case). I visited my nutritionist, and she recommended that I add collagen to my daily diet. She told me to add collagen-rich foods like bone broth, fish, eggs, greens, and citrus to my diet. I was aware of my loathsome for bone broth and totally knew the fact that bone broths are so rich in collagen. I decided to take it as medicine even though I don’t like the taste, and was on my way to find the best possible drinks that I can enjoy bone broth without getting the actual taste. So, I came up with bone broth added to my hot chocolate, and it was perfect for my taste buds. I am adding some collagen powder, but that’s totally optional for you.

I was looking to cut refined sugar in my diet, so I added maple syrup with some vanilla extract to mask the flavor of bone broth. Luckily, it worked! Although floating marshmallow peaks on this drink are optional, they always catch my kid’s attention, and now my whole family loves it a lot.

Why Will You Love This Recipe?

  • Winter Wellness Drink: Forget the uncomfortable chilly winter because this hot chocolate provides you with warmth and various health benefits. Enjoy hot chocolate, but in a nutritious way. Trust me, it’s super comforting.
  • Kid-Friendly: Kids are usually not fans of soups and broth, but they are like real chocolate ghosts. This bone broth hot cocoa is loved by kids and adults equally.
  • Offer Adaptations: Don’t worry if you are a “gluten-free or dairy-free” person. All the ingredients are naturally gluten-free and can be made dairy-free by substituting whole milk with almond, coconut or any plant-based milk. We cannot make it vegan because bone broth can’t be substituted.
  • Quick to Pour in Cup: This recipe is hassle-free and ready in only 10 minutes without creating a big mess.

Bone Broth Vs Broth

Broth is generally prepared by simmering meat and various vegetables in water for a maximum of 2 hours. Bone broth is an evolution of broth made by simmering the animal bones (mostly beef or chicken) with tendons and ligaments long enough (approximately 12- 24 hours or more) that it dissolves all the collagen in bones. Sometimes, meat, spices, and vegetables are simmered along with them to get a treasure of nutrients in a single bone broth.

Bone Broth Hot Chocolate Benefits

Being a Biology major myself, I believe in viewing the ingredients of recipes from a nutritional perspective, and it’s totally worth knowing the science behind them. To know the importance of collagen in your diet, you must acknowledge some facts about it. Every protein is made of amino acid units. Similarly, collagen is also a protein and is made of three amino acids that are grouped to form a triple helix structure protein fibril. Our body needs vitamin C or other trace minerals to make them fully functional. That’s why I take citrus fruit or berries whenever I take collagen. Milk in hot cocoa is electrolyte-rich rich mainly has magnesium and calcium, making it more beneficial.

Collagen is the basic foundation of most of the human body. It is a type of protein that provides structure and strength to our bodies. Collagen helps tighten skin, relieve joint pain, and improve the gut lining. It also helps with the wellness of nails and hair.

  • Chicken Bone Broth: A cup of chicken or beef bone broth. I am using homemade bone broth that my mom made a few days ago. You can use Kettle and Fire or any brand.
  • Milk: I am a whole milk girlie, but don’t worry. You can use half-and-half, skim, or cream. Even plant-based milk like almond, oat, or coconut works for a dairy-free option.
  • Cocoa Powder: When you use cocoa powder in hot chocolate, you can also call it hot cocoa. Use one-third cup of unsweetened cocoa powder.
  • Maple Syrup: Instead of sugar, 2 tablespoons of maple syrup or even honey are a great choice, and they contain a lot more nutrients.
  • Vanilla and Cinnamon: To dominate the bone broth aroma, use one and a half teaspoons of vanilla and a dash of powdered cinnamon.
  •  Collagen Powder: This one is totally optional. You can add a scoop if you like or skip it if it’s not suitable for you.
  • Toppings: Willingly use marshmallows, shaved chocolate for café-style drink.

Instructions

Put milk, bone broth, maple syrup, unsweetened cocoa powder, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Stir all these bone broth hot cocoa ingredients together.

Once the unsweetened cocoa incorporates well, forming a smooth liquid, turn the heat to medium-low. Cook it for about 5-6 minutes, or until it starts steaming and bubbling, stirring continuously.

Blend the hot cocoa for an extra frothy and velvety texture, but that is totally optional.

I like to add marshmallows with shaved chocolate. To make it extra memorable, add extra toppings like whipped cream, chocolate chips, cinnamon dust, or caramel!

Expert Tips

  • Heat Slowly: Heat hot chocolate with bone broth slowly while stirring occasionally ensure a silky texture. Never let it boil to keep it warm without losing the richness.
  • Mix Cocoa in Liquid: To simplify the recipe, mix the cocoa powder in water or milk instead of adding it directly to hot chocolate. This will help the cocoa powder dissolve more smoothly without making lumps.
  • Adjust Sweetness: Different cocoa powders may taste different. If you are using any different cocoa powder, adjust the sweetness accordingly by gradually adding maple syrup or honey.
  • Make It Frothy: Whisk or froth the warm hot chocolate before serving for a bubbly, smooth texture. You can also blend it warm to get the frothy texture.
  • Make the Serving Mugs Warm: Serving them in a pre-warm cup helps them remain warm for longer. You can rinse the mug in hot water before adding this warm and cozy drink.

Storage Suggestions

I recommend serving it warm and fresh and avoiding freezing it. However, the leftover drink can be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight jar for 4 days. Make sure to store it after letting it cool completely at room temperature.
