Why Will You Love This Recipe
- Make at Home: The best thing about this drink is that you can easily make it home. You need four ingredients for this recipe. When it was launched, I ordered this drink many times in January 2023, and making it at home was a win-win situation.
- Make the Recipe Even Easier! If you find making hazelnut syrup at home difficult, you can simplify the recipe by using store-bought. How simple is that, right?
- You can Make Adjustments! My husband is not into nutty flavors and likes the taste of the ones I make at home. He often makes adjustments, like adding less hazelnut syrup. You can also use different milk for it.
- Suitable for Vegans: Most espresso-based drinks use dairy milk, but not anymore. This recipe is for anyone who loves iced espresso drinks but wants a vegan dairy milk alternative.
What is Hazelnut Shaken Espresso
Shakerato, shaken espresso, has its roots in Italy. Shakerato consists of espresso, ice, and sugar syrup (or any sweetener). I think you get it right. Hazelnut shaken espresso has espresso, hazelnut syrup (as a sweetener), and ice shaken vigorously for 20 seconds in a closed jar and then topped with oat milk.
The Science of Shaken Espresso Drink
Shaken espresso drinks taste a thousand times better due to emulsification, which creates unity in flavors. The ice striking the espresso creates tiny bubbles and a smooth texture that makes your taste buds feel amazing.
Equipment
- Espresso machine (You can use Moka pot, AeroPress, or French press in case you don’t have an espresso machine)
- Cocktail stirrer (or any latte shaker or mason jar with lid)
Ingredients For Iced Hazelnut Oatmilk Shaken Espresso
- Blonde Espresso Shots: Pull out as many blonde espresso shots as you like with the help of the espresso machine. I want 2 shots for my tall serving (12 oz fluid). If you don’t have an espresso machine, you can use a Moka pot, AeroPress, or French press. Strong brewed coffee will also work. Blonde espresso is the light roast coffee beans espresso. It’s better to use blonde roast for espresso, but you can use medium or dark roast beans if you like. Decaffeinated will also work.
- Ice Cubes: Take as much ice (or coffee ice) as you want. I am taking a cup of ice.
- Hazelnut Syrup: Two tablespoons of hazelnut syrup will give it a nutty flavor. You can use store-bought syrup, but I also mentioned homemade syrup. If you like or don’t like the nutty flavor, you can increase or decrease the amount of hazelnut syrup.
- Oat Milk: 6 ounces of any brand or homemade oat milk. You can also use dairy milk as you want.
How To Make Hazelnut Syrup
1.Roast Raw Hazelnuts
Spread the raw hazelnuts (Filberts) on a baking tray. Bake for 15 minutes at 180°C.
2.Remove Hazelnut Skin
Place the roasted hazelnuts on a tea towel and rub them against the surface to partially remove their thin, paper-like brown skin.
3.Chop The Hazelnuts
When the skin is removed transfer it on a clean board and chop them roughly.
4.Make The Syrup
Cook the sugar and water in a clean saucepan for about 4-5 minutes on medium heat. Once the sugar is dissolved and bubbles start to form, add the chopped hazelnuts and turn the heat to low. Cook for about 20-25 minutes. Strain it into the pan and cook for 5 minutes on low heat.
5.Store
Cool and store the syrup in an airtight bottle. Use it in your favorite drinks. If it is properly stored, it can last for about 2-3 months in the refrigerator.
Pro Tip
Use leftover hazelnuts for various dishes. They can be topped on toast, desserts, and spreads. You can make hazelnut butter by blending softened sweet hazelnuts and a teaspoon of vanilla in a food processor until smooth. Spread it on toast along with berries and your favorite fruits for a perfect breakfast.
Instructions
1.Prepare Shaken Hazelnut Espresso
Add ½ cups of ice to a shaker or jar. Pour 2 shots of espresso
and hazelnut syrup into the shaker and secure it with a lid. Shake the espresso-hazelnut mixture vigorously for 20-25 seconds.
2.Combine Shaken Espresso with Oat Milk
Pour the shaken hazelnut espresso into a glass. Put the remaining cup of ice in it.
Top it with oat milk and enjoy the delicious hazelnut-shaken espresso topped with oat milk.
Make It with Three Standard Size
Iced hazelnut shaken espresso can be made in three standard serving glasses. The measurement and ratio of shots and milk are carefully measured.
- Tall (12 fl oz and 2 shots, 5 ounces of oat milk)
- Vente (24 fl oz and 3 shots, 7 ounces of oat milk)
- Grande (16 fl oz and 4 shots, 10 ounces of oat milk)
Can I Make This in Hot Version
Since the main key technique is shaking espresso with ice, I don’t think it can be made in a hot version. To make the shaken espresso, we need ice shaken with espresso.
Variation and Additions
The recipe offers you a variety of additions and variations.
- Try lavender, maple, or caramel syrup instead of hazelnut for a non-nutty profile. Pumpkin syrup
- Add cinnamon powder or vanilla flavor for sweet and warm aroma.
- You can make espresso using coffee beans with different roasts. This recipe uses blonde espresso made with light roast beans. Try dark or medium roast for a bold and robust flavor.
- If you are less tolerant of caffeine, then try it with decaffeinated espresso. Decaf espresso is made with coffee beans, which remove most of the caffeine before roasting. Decaffeinated beans contain less caffeine, about 2–4 mg p
How Much Caffeine Is in It
A shot of blonde espresso has about 85 mg of caffeine, and two shots of espresso have about 170 mg of caffeine. You can adjust the amount of caffeine by adjusting the shots of espresso.
