The Best Oreo Hot Chocolate Feel Like A Hug

Who doesn’t want a cup of Oreo hot chocolate on a cold day? Combine Oreo biscuits, chocolate chips, milk, and heavy cream to make your winter nights special.

I have always been looking for a hot chocolate recipe with real ingredients, not powdered products. Oreo biscuits add a significant flavor while chocolate chips melt and give the hot chocolate a rich luxury taste. I like to add heavy cream to make it extra silky, creamy, and indulgent. I really want you to treat me with something creamy, chocolate, and a warm cup, and I think what is better than a cup of hot chocolate with Oreo. The flavor can be enhanced with whipped cream, melted chocolate, and Oreo toppings to make it more appetizing.

Difference between hot chocolate and hot cocoa

Well, many of you are a bit confused about hot cocoa and hot chocolate. They both differ in chocolate choices. To make hot cocoa, you will need cocoa powder, either simple or Dutch-processed, while hot chocolate is made with chocolate, either sweet or semi-sweet. I hope you won’t be confused about these two next time.

Why will you love this recipe?

  • Oreos in Hot Chocolate: My favorite Oreos make hot chocolate special. They are available in my home, and I always pick them up whenever I go to the mart.
  • Toppings are Endless: There are many additions and toppings in Oreo cookie hot chocolate, such as marshmallows, chocolate syrup, whipped cream, or caramel syrup (the list doesn’t end here).
  • Done in Little Time: Your winter comfort hot chocolate will come together in 15 minutes. You can do more for family or the crowd.

Ingredients

The Best Oreo Hot Chocolate Feel Like A Hug 9
  • 10 Oreo biscuits
  • ¼ cup (50g) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 2 cups of milk (500ml)
  • 1 cup hot milk
  • ¼ cup (60ml) heavy cream (optional)

For topping (optional)

  • Whipped cream
  • Melted chocolate

Instructions

Put the Oreos in a Ziplock bag and seal it. Crush them into fine powder using a rolling pin or a chopper. Bring these Oreos to the point that they form a fine powder, and no large chunks remain. I use the plastic bag method; you can simply use the grinder.

Add the crushed Oreos, semi-sweet chocolate chips, and whole milk to a medium saucepan. Optionally, add the heavy cream and cook on high heat while stirring continuously with a spatula. Bring the Oreo milk to boil for 5 minutes. The mixture thickens as you keep stirring. Once the mixture is thick and bubbling starts, it is ready.

Variations and Additions

  • Cocoa Powder Choice: You can make Oreo hot cocoa by mixing cocoa powder instead of chocolate chips. I use real chocolate for a silky, smooth texture. I recommend using Dutch-processed cocoa for a smooth and mild chocolate flavor.
  • Milk Choice: Whole milk is my personal favorite for creamy hot chocolate, but this recipe doesn’t restrict you to it. You can use skim milk or 2% (reduced fat). Non-dairy milk like almond, coconut, or oat milk also works well. I tasted it with almond milk, and it was delicious.
  • Chocolate choice: You can use white chocolate instead of brown and dark to get the white hot chocolate.
  • Replace heavy cream with half and half if you want to add a rich luxury touch.
  • Add a vanilla twist for aroma and flavor.
  • Espresso shot or espresso powder to get the bold flavor in your hot chocolate.

Toppings

  • Whipped cream
  • Melted chocolate
  • Cinnamon or nutmeg powder
  • Caramel syrup
  • Chocolate syrup
  • Oreos biscuits
  • Colorful sprinkles
  • Marshmallows

Expert Tips

  • The Oreos should be crushed in fine powder for a smooth and velvety texture.
  • Strain the hot chocolate for a chocolaty and silky texture that will slip into your mouth. Most importantly, it will give the real hot chocolate feel with no large lumps that feel unpleasant.

Storing and Reheating

Hot chocolate can be prepared a couple of days ahead and stored in an airtight refrigerator vessel. Heat the hot chocolate on a stovetop when you are willing to serve. Stir it until it becomes warm and does not boil because boiling can make the milk curdle.  If you have added half and half instead of heavy cream, then do not boil the hot chocolate because half and half are heat sensitive and can curdle up.
