Why Portobello Mushrooms?
Americans are obsessed with edible mushrooms. One report says that an average American eats approximately 2 kilograms of Portobello mushrooms yearly. Portobello mushrooms are a variety of edible mushrooms that belong to the Agaricus bisporus species, with a significant brown color and meaty flavor. They are often served with steaks, burgers, sauces, soups, and as a substitute for meat in vegetarian dishes. They have many health benefits, as they are rich sources of vitamin B and lots of nutrients.
Ingredients
- Butter: Take unsalted butter. Sautéing portobello mushrooms in butter will help caramelize them and make them savory, tender, and soft. I would not recommend using oil.
- Mushrooms: Portobello mushrooms are used to build the sauce’s significant flavor. Chop the mushrooms for a smooth texture. You can also use Cremini mushrooms (baby portobello) for the sauce because they belong to the same species as portobello.
- Garlic: I believe that no sauce is a Sauce without garlic. Minced garlic is a must for the unique garlicky flavor.
- Cream of Mushroom Soup: For that comforting, earthy, and creamy texture. I use 1 can (10.5 Fl oz) of Campbell’s cream of mushroom. You can also use heavy cream for the creamy sauce.
- Water: I use water to adjust the consistency of the mushroom sauce. The cream of mushroom is already creamy, and cooking it in the sauce would make it extra thick, so I use water to adjust the sauce consistency.
- Seasonings: Season the sauce with salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder. You can also use your desired seasonings, such as herbs like thyme, rosemary, oregano, and basil for the herby notes and spices like Italian seasoning, smoked paprika, red chili flakes, and cayenne pepper for a spicy kick.
Instructions
1.Cook the Mushrooms
Melt unsalted butter on medium-low heat.
Toss portobello mushrooms with minced garlic.

Sauté the chopped mushrooms in butter until they are soft and tender and change color to brown.
2.Make Sauce
Add cream of mushroom soup,

water, salt, black pepper(grounded), garlic powder, and onion powder to the sautéed mushrooms. Mix and cook the sauce for 4-5 minutes or until you achieve your desired consistency.

3.Serve
Serve with lots of cheese over the steak and burgers, and enjoy your favorite meals.

Expert Tips
- One thing you should consider while making the sauce is deglazing. When the mushrooms start browning, we add water or any liquid like vinegar that helps deglazing flavors and colors adhere to the pan while sautéing them.
- Reducing a sauce is a necessary principle of making sauces. Sauce consistency is important. An ideal sauce is thick and light, creating contrasts. So, make the sauce while keeping this principle in mind. Add more water if the sauce is too thick or dense. Reduce the water by cooking the sauce if it is too runny.
- Sauces create a fine dining experience by adding colors and flavors to the dinner plates. The purpose of sauces is to fill dishes and join dish elements, making them a whole.
- I want to share how I enjoy this sauce. Try it in a burger dripping with creamy mushroom sauce, filled with a juicy meat patty, caramelized onions, and cheese.
- This sauce is delicious with steaks (beef or chicken), pasta, burgers, and veggies. For a fine experience, serve it with roasted broccoli, asparagus, and your favorite veggies. How can I not mention how delicious this sauce is, along with mashed potatoes and smoked chicken breast?

Storage Suggestion
Refrigerate the sauce in an airtight container for 3-4 days or freeze for up to a month. Thaw it and warm it on the stove top before serving.
